Official Appalachian Trail maps are printed on waterproof, tear-resistant, material at a scale of one inch per mile. They include precise elevation profiles, mileage logs for major trail landmarks (including shelters and other overnight sites), emergency telephone numbers, and detail on surroundings area up to three miles or more. Water sources, parking areas, side trails, and the boundaries of various public lands are shown as well.
These maps are based on the trail's official geographic information system and checking on the ground by volunteers and by Appalachian trail Conservancy staff members who know the areas well. Needing neither batteries, downloads, nor signals they are as important to your safety on the trail as a first-aid kit and enhance your experience by placing your whereabouts in context.
