Ants are a underrated fish food. Ants are out almost year-round in VA. and can frequently be seen scurrying around trout streams. They make for an excellent high protein fish food. And when nothing else is hatching what are trout gonna eat, but the little rascals that plop into the stream.
These patterns usually get more attention come summer/ late-summer, but should not be overlooked at other times of the year. I've seen large (sz. 10) fat ants clumsily climbing on rocks as early as February just this year.
